LOCATION:
Mount Sumbing is located to the northwest of Magelang District. Views of the stratovolcano peak can be enjoyed through the district as well as from the top of Candi Borobudur.

DESCRIPTION:
At peak altitude of 3,371m and last recorded eruption in 1730, Mt Sumbing is neither the tallest volcano or the most active one. Nonetheless, I think this mountain is pleasing in its graceful gradient and somewhat mystical when viewed above the morning mist.

This stratovolcano dominates the landscape between the city of Yogyakarta and Dieng Plateau, a popular mountain resort. The mountain is considered massive because it covers four different districts (kabupaten) if measured from the ground up, namely Magelang, Temanggung, Wonosobo and Purworejo.

The best view of the mountain is said to be from Desa Gentingsari in Parakan-Temanggung at an altitude of 950m, but I thought the view from Candi Borobudur was equally impressive.

Actually, Mt Sumbing is not known as a tourist attraction (objek wisata) as yet. Nonetheless, it is possible to combine the conquering of its peak with a normal trip to Dieng Plateau. It is said that the view from the top is amazing.

Spectacular.
